Field notes / A small photographic practice
Start at the edges
A quieter photograph begins with a look around the border.
Before taking a photograph, look away from the subject for a moment and inspect the four edges of your screen. A bright sign, a cut-off object or an unexpected shape can pull attention away from the thing you noticed first.
Move before you zoom
Take a small step to either side if it is safe to do so. Watch how the background changes. Lowering or raising the camera can separate a subject from a distracting line without needing a different lens.
Leave deliberate space
Try one version with the subject close to an edge and another with more space around it. Neither arrangement is automatically correct. Compare how your eye travels through each image and choose the version that supports your intention.
A five-minute exercise
Photograph one object three times without moving the object. Change only your position and framing. Review all three at the same size, then write one sentence about what changed. Keep the unsuccessful frames too; they show what your decisions did.
